The brown pelican is a large seabird known for its long bill and throat pouch. They are found along the coasts of the Americas, from the southern United States to South America, as well as in the Caribbean. Brown pelicans primarily feed on fish, using their keen eyesight to spot prey from above before diving headfirst into the water to catch them.
Brown Pelicans are plentiful in Charleston. There are several rookeries in Charleston including one at Castle Pinckney on Shute’s Folly. This is the island that is just off the east end of the Battery.
